Random thought on a quote

It’s interesting that one of the most widely-quoted lines from the classics, the „I am no bird“ line from Jane Eyre, is often cut off so as to leave out the part which grants it its true power: „I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with independent will, which I now exert to leave you„. It’s merely a platitude without the part saying exactly how this free will is put into use, and it’s a powerful use because it’s the opposite of what usually happens in modern romance stories (be it book, film or TV show) – cutting off a bad relationship, putting your own integrity and safety first, refusing to compromise for the bad boy in hopes of changing him. It should be quoted in full because all too often emancipation is reduced to comforting-sounding platitudes with no weight behind them, and real emancipatory actions are obscured or even purposefully subverted.
